Het engie doel van deze reis was het zien van de vulkaanuitbarsting in de Fagradalsfjall die al sinds 19 maart 2021 gaande was. Deze eruptie ontwikkelde zich in de loop der maanden voortdurend, van rustig gespetter tot periodieke lavafonteinen tot 500 meter hoog naar een rustiger periode van rust en korte uitbarstingen die de hele krater overstroomde.
Samen met Nancy, een goede vriendin, besloten we eind juni op vulkaan expeditie te gaan. Ikzelf heb in totaal 4 nachten bij de vulkaan doorgebracht in deze periode. We gingen 's-nachts omdat de lavastromen in de schemeringsperiode het beste te zien waren.
Ondanks dat de vulkaan niet super actief was die week waren de uitzichten ronduit indrukwekkend. Tijdens de eerste nacht liepen we naar de deels afgekoelde lava stroom in Nathagi, waar je tussen de gekoelde lave het gloeiende gesteente op sommige plaatsen zag zitten. Het betrof hier voornamelijk Pahoehoe lava. Later beklommen we de Langyryggur bergrug voor een uitzicht op de vulkaan zelf met zijn lava stromen.
De volgende nacht kozen we het B pad die ons dichter bij de vulkaan bracht. Ondanks de ietwat pittige wandeling (inclusief een steile klim waarvan een deel langs een gespannen touw) was het uitzicht wederom fantastisch omdat de lava deze nacht het Geldingadalir instroomde. Dit was een fraai schouwspel.
De volgende nacht zijn we opnieuw over de Langyryggur omhoog gelopen, nu helemaal tot het eind vanaf waar we de krater in konden kijken. Ondanks dat de vulkaan minder actief was (er vloeide geen lava uit), waren er wel lavafonteinen te zien.
De volgende dag reden we naar de Krisuvikerberg kliffen voor een fraai uitzicht over de Atlantische oceaan en een zeemeeuw kolonie.
De laatste nacht (ik sloeg een nachtje over om bij te slapen), ontmoette we Helga die die week in Reykjavik zat, en deden een korte wandeling in het Natthagi dal. Zij had een gasmeter bij zich die enkele keren alarm sloeg voor te hoge concentraties koolmonoxide en kooldioxide (ontgassing uit de lavastroom). Gas kan zie nl. makkelijk ophopen in een dal als er weinig wind is. en beide gassen zijn zowel onzichtbaar, onreukbaar en gevaarlijk (koolmonoxide is uiterst giftig). Ook hadden de autoriteiten in een dag een nieuwe dam aan het begin van het dal opgeworpen om de lava voorlopig te stoppen.
De volgende dag was het (heel vroeg) alweer tijd om naar huis te gaan, maar niet na een mooie blik op de active krater vanuit het vliegtuig. We kwamen veilig aan in Nederland.

The only goal for his trip was to witness the volcanic eruption that was ongoing in the Fagradalfjall area. This eruption started on march 19 2021 and developed from mild spattering, geyser-like activity with upto 500m high fountains and last month a more gentle outflow of lava with quiet periods and huge short outbursts that overflew the crater completely.
Topgether with Nancy, a good friend of mine, we decided to go on a volcano hunt in the last week of june. During this week, I spent 4 nights in the eruption area - we, went at night since the lavaflows then were better visible due to the twilight period.
Despite the volcano not being super-active that week, the views were magnifisant. On the first night we saw the partly cooled lavaflow in Natthagi valley, at some places we could see the glowing rock through cracks in the solidified basalt, that mostly had a Pahoehoe structure. After hiking upto the Langyryggur ridge we had a beautiful view over the volcano where lava was flowing out ar a constant rate.
The second night we choose to do the "B" path to the edge of the Geldingadalir valley and a much closer view on the volcano. Despite the hike itself being somewhat challanging (a steep climb, partly along a roped section), the view was magnifisant again since lava was flowing into Geldingadalir that night.
The next night, we hiked up the Langyryggur again, although further up than the first night, to have a view into the crater. The volcano wasn't very active, there was hardly any lava outflow but fountains were visible inside the crater.
The next day we drove to the Krisuvikerberg cliffs which gave a nice view over the Atlantic and some Seagul colonies.
The next night, we met Helga, a mutual friend, and together we headed to the Nathagi valley again for a short hike into the valley. The gasmeter she carried, sometimes sounded the alarm for too high concentration of Carbon monoxide and Carbon dioxide (emitted from the laval) that accumulates into the valley when there is little wind. Both gasses are invisible and do not smell and are both dangerous (carbon monoxide being extremely poisonous). In the mean time, the goverment had constructed a barrier to close off the valley, it took them one day. This, in the hope to prevent the lava for reaching the road for a while.
The next early morning, it was time to head home again. After a nice view from the plane over the active crater (again) we arrived safe and sound in The Netherlands again.
