Op 3 augustus rond 14h30 lokale tijd opende zich opnieuw een spleet waaruit Lava stroomde. Deze eruptie was grofweg in hetzelfde gebied als de uitbarsting van een jaar eerder dus het was voor onmogelijk on niet te gaan. Binnen 2 uur waren de vliegtickets geboekt. Omdat Nancy al gepland in IJsland was en sowieso al in Grindavk zou zijn, besloten we ook een auto te huren.
Opnieuw had ik een zitplaats aan de juiste kant van het vliegtuig want opnieuw kon ik de vulkaan vanuit de lucht al zien. De eerste avond zijn we even wat rondgereden, de Gloed van de uitbarsting was duidelijk te zien vanuit de verre omgeving en dat leverde een paar fraaie plaatjes op.
De volgende dag was dan echt de "grote" dag. Rond het middaguur bezochten we Gunnekver, een klein gebied met hete bronnen en modderpoelen op het westelijke punt van Reykjanes. We liepen ook verder naar Reykjaneviti, de vuurtoeren en kliffen waar de film "Eurovision song contest. The story of Fire saga" is opgenomen. Hier stonden nog twee keyboards als stille getuigen.
Rond 16h togen we naar de start van pad A, de route naar de eruptie. Omdat de nieuwe eruptie "achter" de vorige lag, was de wandeling ernaartoe een stuk langer - 6km over deels slecht terrein. En hoewel het pad voor het grootste deel al verbeterd was, was een wandeling door 1.5 km blokkenvelden toch onvermijdelijk.
Uiteindelijk waren we ruim voor half acht bij de eruptie, het was er record druk maar er was genoeg ruimte om een stekkie te vinden en van het schouwspel te genieten. Inmiddels waren er nog 3 kraters actief van de oorspronkelijke spleetvulkaan maar de activiteit was groot met af en toe fonteinen tot wel 100 meter. Voor de hoofdkrater had zich een enorm lavameer gevormd dat waarschijnlijk ongeveer 200m lang en 100m breed was. Vandaaruit zagen we af en toe doorbraken van lava die rivieren vormden van gesmolten gesteente. Ook zagen we een paar keer de kraterwand instorten.
Drie uur genoten we van het inferno dat duidelijk warmte uitstraalde. Ook was de uitgelezen mogelijkheid om drone opnames te maken van de uitbarsting want het was in het dal vrijwel windstil. Even voor half elf verlieten we heb gebied en wandelde in ongeveer 2.5 uur weer terug naar de parkeerplaats. En lastige wandeling over de blokkenvelden omdat het nu vrijwel donker was en alleen de hoofdlamp en de niet aflatende stroom mensen ons de weg wezen. Uiteraard moest er, terug in het hotel, geproost worden op het slagen van deze avond zodat het pas tegen vieren bedtijd was.
De volgende dag, in de middag zijn we teruggegaan met de bedoeling om het pad deels weer naar de vulkaan te volgen maar de parkeerplaats stond vol en er was die middag veel wind, dus we besloten de beschutting op te zoeken van het Nathagi dal, waar de lavastroom van het jaar ervoor nog steeds zwavelachtig rook.

On august 3 2022 a new eruption started in roughly the same area as the one from last year. So, there was no way for me to not go to Iceland and watch the event. Within two hours the tickets were booked and since Nancy was already i n Iceland for her planned holiday, we decided to rent a car.
Again, I reserved my seat on the right side of the plane so I could already see the eruption upon arrival. The first night, we drove to some location where we could easily see the glow of the eruption reflected against the clouds.
However, the big day arrived. Around noon, we visited the Gunnuhver mud pool area and afterwards we walked to the coast and the Reykjanesviti lighthouse. There on the beach two keyboards were installed to point the exact location of some scenes that were shot for the movie "Eurovision song contest. The story of Fire saga"
Around 16h, we drove to the eruption area and started our ascent to the eruption site. For this we followed the A route that was also used to get to previous year's eruption. However, the new eruption was located "behind" the old one, so the hike was two times longer, about 6km each way. Despite about 75 percent was well walkable, the 1.5km left to improve was a difficult hike on very rugged terrain scattered with boulders.
After 2.5 hours of hiking, around 19:25, we arrived at the eruption site. There were many people there, it was even a record. But this was easy to find a spot where we could relax and watch the inferno that was unfolding. From the original fissure, only three craters remained active when we were there, the sight was tremendously impressive, nonetheless. The volcano was very active, with 100m high fountains every now and then. A lava lake had formed in front of the crater which measured about 200 by 100 meters. At some points, lava broke through the lake's rim, forming lava rivers. A few times, we saw the collapse of the crater wall.
For three hours, we enjoyed the spectacle, and the heat-emitting inferno. It also gave me the opportunity to make some drone footage, which was a long-lasting wish for me. In the valley there was hardly any wind. Shortly before 22h30, we left the site for the long like back to the parking. Since it was dark, the head lamp and the almost endless line of people helped us to find our way through the difficult 1.5 km of boulders before entering the path again. When we arrived back at our accommodation, around 2AM. We found some time to have a toast on the success of our mission before we hit the sack at around 4.
The following afternoon our plan was to head back to, at least the old eruption site, halfway the route but lack of parking space and high winds prevented us from doing that. Instead, we drove to the Nathagi parking space and headed to the Nathagi valley for some relaxation and hiking around. There still was a sulfur smell hanging over last year's basalt deposits.
The next morning, for me, it was time to head home again but not bevore seeing the eruption - again - from the window seat of the plane. Mission succeeded!
