This is a short trip I made to Senegal, A culturally rich country with a not-so-bright past. Numerous monuments remember to a colonial past and to the period of slavery, a black page in human history. One of the foremost monuments is Ile de la Goree with its colonial buildings and slavery museum (a former slave prison). A less controversial city is Saint Louis with its splendid architecture.
Of coarse, Senegal also has its fair share of natural wonders, like the Bandia reserve where one can spot some African wildlife. And the Mangroves, delta and lagoon areas in the south. Here, we visited two villages that we sponsored with rise, which is very needed in this very poor area.
Somone itself is a quiet village that is not too spoiled by tourism. But Senegal is a country that will need tourism to survive since all other potentially resources are possessed by foreign companies.
Dit was een korte reis die ik maakte naar Senegal. Het is een cultureel rijk land dat helaas behoorlijk geleden heeft onder het koloniale verleden. Talrijke monumenten herinneren hieraan en aan de slavernij, een zwarte bladzijde uit de geschiedenis! Een van de belangrijkste monumenten hiervan is het Ile de la Goree, een fraai eiland met koloniale bouw en een tot museum omgebouwde slaven gevangenis. Een minder controversiele stad is Saint Louis met zijn fraaie koloniale bouw.
Uiteraard heeft het land ook qua natuur behoorlijk wat te bieden zoals het Bandia park met zijn Afrikaanse diersoorten maar ook de mangroves, delta's en lagunes in het zuiden. Hier wonen ok vele mensen in bittere armoede. De rijst die we gesponserd hebben een twee dorpen was dan ook een welkome verassing.
Somone zelf is een rustige, niet teveel door het toerisme verpest dorp. Maar Senegal is een land dat het toerisme nodig heeft omdat alle andere bezittingen in handen zijn van buitenlandse bedrijven.
